The first permanent color photograph, taken by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861. The quality of the photograph, or the quality of the scan of the photograph, but it is difficult to figure out what the subject of the photograph is. With a little research and the fact that James Clerk Maxwell was a Scott, I believe this to be a piece of tartan ribbon.
