The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country in the world (after the USA and the UK).

The flag of the Philippines is the only national flag that is flown differently during times of peace or war. A portion of the flag is blue, while the other is red. The blue portion is flown on top in time of peace and the red portion is flown in war time.

Some 83% of Filipinos are Catholic. About 5% are Muslim. The rest are made up of smaller Christian denominations and Buddhist.)

The yo-yo was invented in the Philippines. The original yo-yos were used as a weapon by hunters.

The Fluorescent lamp was invented by a Filipino (Thomas Edison discovered the electric light bulb and the fluorescent lighting was
thought up by Nikola Tesla. But the fluorescent lamp
we use today was invented by Agapito Flores (a Cebu man
named Benigno Flores of Bantayan Island, , a Filipino scientist. Americans helped then-Philippine leader Ramon Magsaysay to develop it
for worldwide commerce.

The Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, was the first European to visit the Philippines. Magellan was in the service of the King of Spain.
